Abstract

This nineteenth edition of LSRL proceedings contains a selection of papers on variety of Romance idioms and includes current topics in established areas of study. The phonology papers focus mostly on syllabic and higher-level prosodic structure. The morphology section deals primarily with compounding. The syntax contributions principally treat infinitival clauses, extraction phenomena, and binding. While synchronic data serve as the point of departure in most of the studies, historical perspectives are also considered in each major section. Included in the volume are two invited contributions,

Abstract

This volume contains 23 papers selected from those presented at the 22nd Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages. The papers address issues in phonology, morphology, syntax/semantics from contemporary theoretical perspectives. In addition, in keeping with the symposium's US-Mexico location and commemoration of the twin quincentenaries of Columbus' first voyage and the publication of Nebrija's grammar, several papers focus on the history of linguistic theory, language contact, variation, and change.

Abstract

This volume presents current research in the formal treatment of linguistic phenomena in the Romance languages. It focuses on a variety of issues in phonology, second language acquisition, semantics, and syntax. Topics in phonological theory include the analysis of geminates, assimilation, rhotics, aspiration, syllabification, the interaction of phonology with morphology, the phonology-phonetics interface, and issues of transderivation and allomorphy selection. The primary question addressed in the area of second language acquisition theory is the issue of learners' access to Universal Grammar

Abstract

This volume contains selected papers from the 27th Linguistic Symposium on Romance Languages (LSRL-27), which was held at the University of California, Irvine, on February 20-22, 1997. The 22 papers deal with current issues in linguistic theory as they can be illuminated by the close analysis and comparative study of Romance languages. A majority of the articles tackles topics in syntax and semantics; the rest is divided among topics in language acquisition, phonology, morphology, and sociolinguistics. Among the well-represented Romance languages examined are (Old) French, Italian, Spanish,

Abstract

This investigation constitutes a quantitative variationist approach toward Spanish in contact with Catalan in Barcelona, Spain. It seeks to empirically measure concrete usage patterns of two phonetic variants, [B;] and [z], in the Spanish of Catalan-Spanish bilinguals, as well as establish the extent to which both variants are conditioned by linguistic factors and Catalan dominance. The careful Spanish speech of 20 Barcelonan females (ages 18-27) was elicited through a word-reading task. Goldvarb binomial logistic regression analyses revealed that sensitivity to linguistic factors varied accord

Abstract

"This volume contains a selection of 18 peer-reviewed papers presented at the 31st edition of Going Romance. Phenomena found in Romance languages (European Portuguese, French, Italian, Spanish, Romanian), in Romance dialects (Cosentino, Salentino, southern Calabrese, Neapolitan, and Trevigiano), and even in creoles with a Romance lexifier (Makista and Kristang) either benefit from in-depth analyses confined to one single variety, or are subjected to comparative analysis (dialect vs standard language, dialect vs different major language(s), cross-dialectal comparison, cross-Romance comparison, and even comparison of language families). Theoretical and experimental approaches complement one another, as do diachrony and synchrony. Individually and as a whole, these contributions show how the Romance languages contribute to a better understanding of issues which are relevant in the current linguistic landscape: acquisition, n-words, ellipsis phenomena, focus and polarity, ditransitive constructions, grammaticalization theory, differential object marking, language ecology, event structure, cyclicity, passives and many more"--

Abstract

This book offers a comparative perspective on the structural and interpretive properties of root-clause complementizers in Ibero-Romance. The driving question the author seeks to answer is where the boundaries between syntax and pragmatics lie in these languages. Contrary to most previous work on these phenomena, the author argues in favor of a relatively strict distribution of labor between the two components of grammar. The first part of the book is devoted to root complementizers with a reportative interpretation. The second part deals with root complementizers and commitment attribution. Finally, the last part presents the results of empirical studies on the topic.

Abstract

Abstract

The Romance languages are the Indo-European languages developed from Latin. The term "Romance Languages" also refers to the academic discipline, which studies the Romance languages and literature from the areas where the Romance languages are spoken. This discipline has a long tradition in Sweden. Swedish academic education and research in the Romance languages forms the subject of this anthology, whose contributions are written by 22 different researchers active in the field. The anthology examines the historical development of the study of the Romance languages in Sweden, as well as important trends in current education and research. The question of what characterizes the Romance languages as an academic discipline in Sweden today is thoroughly discussed in several of the contributions. The book brings a metadisciplinary perspective in the sense that it is the discipline itself, Romance languages - or some aspect of it - that constitutes the object of study. It is aimed at anyone with an interest in university and scholarly history and the development and position of academic language subjects in a Swedish university context. In addition, several of the contributions are of relevance for readers with an interest in language didactics and for pedagogical research on language teaching in higher education. The hope is that the reflections and investigations gathered in this anthology will serve as a starting point for the future development of the study of the Romance languages in Sweden.
